MD3000 and multipath

$

I think I know the answer to this but would like to confirm with the community. I believe the documentation wasn't well written for the MD3000 and multipathing for CentOS 5.5. I have been referencing the MD3200 for more information. And I am not sure if it was inexperience with the techs and Linux when we set these up but every time we had a question most would reply "I'm more of a Windows guy". In any case We have mounted the MD3000s to the /dev/sd(x) mount and I think this is incorrect. After having a heck of a time getting multipath working multipath -ll is now working. Am I correct in saying we need to mount to the group name 3600221900092fd4e000005c9497f1b2b and not /dev/sdc as in the example below and if so does that mean I have to re-create my LVM?

Also from the listing below it looks like it is still not correct in finding the mount as it is showing 20M

3600221900092fd4e000005c9497f1b2b dm-5 DELL,Universal Xport
[size=20M][features=0][hwhandler=0][rw]
\_ round-robin 0 [prio=1][active]
 \_ 1:0:0:31 sdc 8:32  [active][ready]
\_ round-robin 0 [prio=1][enabled]
 \_ 1:0:1:31 sde 8:64  [active][ready]

Any help would be appreciated. I contacted Dell and it seems we still don't have this resolved.

Nick

I noticed that on the PowerVault 122 LTO that there is not an option for the Barcode reader but on the PowerVault 122 DLT drive there is. Is this a limitation of the LTO drive or a miss print? Also who is the OEM for these drive ADIC?

I have a problem similar to the following post with a variation.

Restoring failed virtual disk on MD3000i

We have one Disk group "0" that has 5 Virtual Disks all showing failed.  We had two of our 15 drives go bad and they have been replaced.  The replacement drives show "Unassigned" and are not being built back into the array.  I had the email for Jason S and attempted to contact him directly.  He informed me that he was in training and they gave the following information.

"The disks are not rebuilding because the virtual disks are failed.  The virtual disks need to be in a degraded state for the rebuild to have the parity to begin.

It is possible to force the old “Failed” disks back online but you would be best calling into dell for assistance on that."

Unfortunately our MD3000i is out of warranty and phone support will not be an option.  I asked for instructions we could try following through email correspondence but have not heard anything back.  Is there anything we can try through the GUI or smcli to get the virtual disks into a degraded state and the two unassigned physical disks assigned and built back into the array?

Resetting the Primary eth / bond on DR4100

I ran the Setup Wizard on a DR4100 with only eth2 and eth3 connected. This created bond0 with these two interfaces, which are the 10GbE ports.

I want to add eth0 and 1 to bond0 and remove eth2 and 3, however, the DR4100 has set eth2 as the primary nic and won't let me remove it from the bond or add nics with different speeds to the bond.

Can anyone tell me how I can either

1. set a different nwif to be the primary or

2. Run the Initial configuration wizard again to setup bond0 with the desired nwifs

Thanks

David

Please clarify how many disks of 3 TB and how many disks of 30 TB is required for usable 100 TB with best performance of RAID 6.

Also please clarify part no: 403-BBDC related to MD3620f dual controller with 4 GB cache each.

Please clarify me ..its urgent

MD3620f and twinax

Hello -

My understanding of SFP+ was the standard supported optics modules and 10GBe twinax across the board, but I was recently told otherwise by a hardware vendor.  All of the SFP+ switches we've dealt with all support Twinax and I'm pretty sure the PowerConnect 8164F supports it as well.

Has anyone tried to connect an MD3620f with Twinax?  I'm mainly interested because we've standardized on 10GBe twinax in our datacenter, and I'd rather not break from that convention just for these enclosures.  All our storage and servers are wired top-of-rack, so we really have no need for the long-distance support that fiber offers.

Thanks,

- Jeff

Failed disk in MD3000i - hot spare not kicking in

Hi,

I'm having a lot of problems with this array.

First a disk failed.  The hot spare didn't activate.  Or maybe it did but it didn't work because I got an error message "Physical disk failed - reconstruction failure"

Then another disk failed so the vdisk went offline.

We had a replacement disk delivered and it was put into the array.  But when I go to Modify -> Replace Physical Disks in Storage Manager it tells me that "There are no failed or missing physical disks in this storage array that can be replaced using the Replace Physical Disks function."

How do I go about getting the vdisk back up and running?

Thanks,

Steve

MD 3200i Expansion

Hello

I have the task of expanding the disk capacity of an exsisting MD3200i installation.

There are two hosts (Dell R510) with there own 3200i SAN's connected via iSCSi. These are both able to be viewed on the MDSM intalled on each R510.

I would like to attach an extra MD3200i with 18 Tb via the SAS interface of one of the exsisting 3200's.

A) Is it possible to connect both hosts?

B) Is it then possible to have 9Tb disks to expand the capacity for both R510's?

I would stress this is only a tempory measure for short term disk space...

Help and advice appreciated :)

Re-fit autoloader with barcode reader?

We have a PV122T DLT VS80 that was purchased without the barcode reader option. I would really love to retro-fit this with a reader, but can't find anything on the support docs about the possibility. Is this a dead end?

SAS/SATA disk firmware: where's the .iso?

I have a copy of version A43 of the Dell SAS/SATA Hard Disk firmware update utility, which was new in March of 2013, i see that A47 has just been released, but it doesn't seem to have any .iso included with it, and says that only windows operating systems are supported.  What happened to having a .iso included, and just booting to the CD, running all the updates, and THEN worrying about which OS you're on? i'm running CentOS, based on Red Hat Linux, and i can't get to the latest and greatest firmware.  Updating disks attached to an MD1000, direct-attached to a PERC6/E.

I get that burning CD's is very 2004, but some of us still definitely prefer it to needing to install a windows OS in order to accomplish such a simple task as updating disk firmware.

Anyone with info, please spill it here!

We have just setup two new servers with san in the following configuration: Dell R620 x2 with 2012 hyper configured in a cluster connected to MD3220 via SAS with one SAS cable on each of the 2 onboard controllers.

Dell Openmanage is reporting failed two drives on 6Gbps SAS HBA controller 0 and 1. Upon checking the MD3220 no drives have failed.

Below is an extract from the logs

ID 0:7 Status Critical Name Physical Device 0:7 State Failed Execute  Bus Protocol SAS Media HDD Revision 0784 Capacity 0.00GB Used RAID Disk Space 0.00GB Vendor ID DELL Product ID MD32xx Serial No.  Negotiated Speed 6.00 Gbps SAS Address 590B11C406C46904

Has anybody encountered errors similar to these?

Cheers,

Server Upgrade - Will Dell's Symantec BE2010 R2 for Win SBS still work?

$

Upgrading a non-profit's machine. For various reasons, they were running SBS 2008 on very good hardware. We're donating time to upgrade the Server OS to Server 2012 Essentials (which is not the question). They use a external USB and a LTO-5 drive for backups (and have a sizable investment in tapes). I know 2008, 2011 and 2012 native Tape backups - hence this simple question:

Will the included Dell 'Backup Exec 2010 R2 for Windows Small Business Server' by Symantec work on Windows Server 2012 Essentials.

Checking Symantec here:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/resources/sites/BUSINESS/content/live/TECHNICAL_SOLUTION/137000/TECH137682/en_US/be_2010_scl.pdf.

Backup Exec 2010 will work on Server 2012.. but being that this is the SBS version (the 'Quick Start Edition'), is that the same thing? Applicable?

The point is they require using the existing tape drive - trying to keep costs down and re-use the existing software (on the same machine).

Thanks

Chuck

MD3000i need cross-generational firmware upgrade with failed drive, hotspare in use

$

So I've got an old MD3000i with .06 firmware on it that needs to be upgraded.  One drive failed and our on-hand spares for this out-of-warranty unit only work with the new generation firmware.  Thus it needs an upgrade.  The hotspare is in use and working properly but if memory serves, the firmware updates will complain that the unit isn't completely healthy.

Is there a method to promote the in-use hotspare to a full on vg member safely?  do i un-hotspare it and manually treat it as a replacement drive somehow?  Or will cross-gen firmware updates go totally fine in this circumstance?

Dell 2950 Storage Errors

$

Greetings,

I am experiencing recurring SCSI/disk errors in OMSA on my Dell PE2950 with an MD1000 DAS box attached. The errors coming from the MD1000.

Here are the errors:
2095 Storage Service Unexpected sense. SCSI sense data: Sense key: 3 Sense code: 11 Sense qualifier: 0: Physical Disk 1:0:1 Controller 1, Connector 1
2350 Storage Service There was an unrecoverable disk media error during the rebuild or recovery operation: Physical Disk 1:0:1 Controller 1, Connector 1
(This error set also happens for disk 1:0:0 and 1:0:2. These are 3/7 disks in a RAID 5 set.)

Decoding the SCSI sense errors, shows this: Medium Error - unrecovered read error

In Windows (2008) disk management, the disk shows as having an error, and reactiviating it works for a short time before it returns to an error state.

There are no pre-fail warnings on any drives, and a chkdsk comes up clean. All drivers and firmware are up to date. OMSA is also current.

Would anyone have suggestions for finding the source of this? Thanks in advance!

Jumper settings for LTO Ultrium-2 Drive in Powervault 114T Chassis.

$

Hello all,

Nice to join the forum.

I have an existing LTO Ultrium 2 Drive in my powervault 114T, and gorwing data requirements have made buying another one essential.

The original unit installed is a newer Quantum drive. The drive I'm trying to install is a older looking full height IBM drive.

Now power is going to drive and I have brought another SCSI cable to connect to server in question.

However server cannot find that i've added drive in hardware and I'm at the conclusion that it must be a jumper settings issue. However the 114T only has a block of jumpers to connect. What am I missing?

An example of the older drive that I have installed.

If you require actual photos of drive and the back of both of drives, please ask.

Thank you all.

Dan.
