Multiple Hosts using same TL2000

I'm looking at consolidating our backup using the TL2000 but there are a few things I'm still unclear about, so here are my questions:

a) Is it possible to connect two hosts to utilize the same TL2000 simultaneously?

b) if so, does the TL2000 require 2 Drives installed? Are there any other special requirements to achieve this?

c) if two drives are installed, can the SAS-to-iSCSI bridge be installed for only one drive while the other drive uses the traditional SAS connection, or is it an all or nothing deal with the iSCSI bridge?

To give a bit of background on what we are trying to achieve here is basically consolidating our backup infra between our Intel Servers and our iSeries Servers by utilizing the same TL2000.

The Intel backup server would be a Virtual Machine using iSCSI to connect to the TL2000.

For the iSeries I would like to continue using native SAS, but if it's not possible on the TL2000 to do SAS and iSCSI simultaneously then I guess I'll have to install an iSCSI HBA on the iSeries.

Thanks

DELL PV132T with 2 SDLT drives

I have a client who has issues with a powervault 132T containing 2 SDLT tape drives with 5252 firmware applied. Tape drive 2 wont perform backups despite being able to run an inventory. I have replaced the drive and applied the same firmware but still the same issue. The Administrator has deleted the drive from the config and rescanned the SCSI bus in order to recongnise the new drive.

Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Replaced SAS5e card on host connected to MD3000

Hi All,

Hopefully I'm explaining this correctly.  PE server connected to a MD3000+MD1000 which has worked fine for years.  The SAS5e card went bad on the PE host.  Replaced that card.  I can see the MD storage array with MDSM just fine, but I'm not able to see the volumes (would virtual disks be the correct term?) I'd created on the PE host within Windows...they are just not showing up as drives.  I can see my existing Host to Virtual Disk mappings in MDSM.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with a HBA ID that was built into the old card which would be different on the new card but as of yet I'm not basing that on fact, just a hunch.  Any thoughts as to how I can regain access to my storage?

Thanks!
Chris

I have a client using BE 2010 SP3 and the tape gets stuck at times.   The fix right now is to stop the rdxmon service and right click on it in explorer and eject it from there ignoring erros.   The version of rdxmon is 1.35.   Is there a newere version that addresses this ?

Anyone know of a fix ?

Thanks

Replace H700 with LSI

Hi,

Can I replace my H700 in my R510 with a LSI RAID card?

I need an Internal and External connector.

We have a R510 (H700 RAID card) and will be purchasing a MD1200 (H800), and we'd like to utilize the existing 12 bays in the R510 as well as the 12 in the MD1200 to expand the current arrays.

Dell does not have a card with external and internal connector, so I'm looking into other options that I can hopefully swap out and it will import arrays automatically or easily. My understanding is that Dell RAID cards are based on LSI, so would they be my best bet?

My other option is to Purchase a H800 for the R510 to connect to the MD1200 and move one array (physically move disks) to the MD1200. So have one array on each controller.

Open to any advice too.

Cheers

MD3000i error 1008

hi,

i've a MD3000i storage with 8 disk and 2 raid module. the md3000i, and the only server, is connect in the switch (one switch for public and one for private).

the creation of the array works without problem, but i can create only one virtual disk. when i try to create the second virtual disk, the software give me this error:

Error 1008 - Could not communicate with the RAID controller module in slot 1 to complete this request.

Possible causes include network or connection problems, RAID controller module problems, or no power to the host or storage array. Check these possible causes and then retry the operation. If you suspect a RAID controller module problem, use the Recovery Guru to resolve the problem.

the status is good, and i don't know why i can do this operation. the other problem is that i can't change the network settings of the iscsi host port module number 1. the error is the same of the virtual disk.

how i can resolve it?

Drive fail in PowerVault MD1220 with PERC controller RAID 5

I am sure of the answer but just want to double check. We have had a bad drive in a MD1220 for a while but

for some reason it never got replaced. Now we have a hard failure in that upon reboot of the server the BIOS complains that "a disk has been removed or is inaccssible.." or something to that effect.  I ordered a new drive and expect it tomorrow. I would assume that I just need to pop the old one out and the other back in and it will rebuild. I absolutely hope it rebuils and I did not lose anything or else we are in a bit of trouble. And just don't ask the backup question.

Note Windows also pretty much "lost" the logical drive as it shows up in computer management as "unallocated" and "unknowm".

MD3660i - Virtual Disks not on preferred path.

Hi,

I have an MD3660i and am experiencing the titled issue.

I have contacted Dell Support twice, the first time the error seemed to be that I had a simplex NVSRAM, installed the duplex, no fix, the second time the Dell Rep said that it was because my Subnetting was not right and therefore it created this problem.

I followed the guide where the controllers IPs had to follow the range:

192.168.130.101

192.168.131.101

192.168.130.102

192.168.131.102

and my subnet for each controller is 255.255.0.0

Can anyone else confirm that it is the subnet causing the issue, and if so please explain why it causes the issue.

Many thanks,

Cody

PowerVault MD3620F: Change RAID Levels Error 84 Not Even Free Capacity

$

Hi Everyone,

I can't find the search button so if this has already been answer I apologize.

I'm trying to convert a Disk Group on my MD3620F from RAID6 to RAID10 to get better IOPS performance but every time I try to convert it I get "Error 84 - The operation cannot complete because there is no free capacity or not enough free capacity on the disk group to accommodate the new RAID level."  Now the Disk Group is 5,584.116GB in size, with a Virtual Disk of 5,584.000GB and 119.609MB Free Capacity.  So obviously 119MB isn't enough, but how do I get around this error?  Is there a way to shrink the Virtual Disk to free up more capacity to perform the RAID change?

Thanks

Unable to Manage PowerVault MD3600f

I've been put into a rather difficult scenario.  Our former admin in charge of storage recently quit with no notice.  We'll say he wasn't the best at documentation.  I'm now trying to reverse engineer what we have set up and I'm coming up short right off the bat.  I'm trying to get our Lab environment hooked up and running so I can learn the ins and outs.

We have a PowerVault MD3600f hooked up to a SAN Environment.  However, I'm unable to even log into the device using the Storage Manager application I have installed.  It sees the array, but when I try to manage it I get the following error message...

The storage management software (version 10.75.G6.24) you are attempting to use is not compatible with the firmware on the RAID controller modules in Storage Array LAB_DISK.

If you have recently updated your RAID controller module firmware, you need to make sure its compatible storage management software has also been installed on all clients connected to this Storage Array.

If the appropriate version is not available, please provide your Customer Support Representative with the following information.

RAID Controller Module firmware version: 07.80.62.60
RAID Controller Module appware version: 07.80.62.60
Device API version required: devmgr.v1080api06.Manager

And the status of the array changes to Upgrade Software in the Storage Manager application.  That seemed straight-forward enough, so I selected Upgrade RAID Controller Module Firmware, thinking I would simply need to update the firmware.  However, when I did that, the window for firmware updates came up and told me...

The RAID Controller Module Firmware cannot be upgraded because the firmware version is no longer supports.  Consult the device documentation on how to perform a manual upgrade.

My first issue is can find no documentation on the manual upgrade process.  The second issue is that when I try to find a download for a newer version of firmware (theoretically something to match the 10.x.x.x in the MDSM software?), the newest download I can find is for a version that is OLDER than the one I currently have installed.

So I'm at a loss.  If it's not clear I have little to no experience with storage and SAN, so forgive any ignorance please!  Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.  If any more info is required from me, please let me know and I'll be happy to provide it.

Adding new MD1200 to existing storage array without powering off host (r815)

Hello, we have an existing storage solution (Using Centos 6.4 with glusterFS)  consisting of a Powervault MD1200 connected to a PowerEdge 815 host (using PERC H800). We've purchased a brand new MD1200 to daisy chain it to the aftermentioned setup. Our question is the following: Is it possible to connect the new enclosure (either daisy chained to the old md1200, or using the second connector of H800) without powering down the host and with out stopping I/O to existing vdisk? Or storage downtime is unavoidable?

Thanks in advance

MD1000 multiple failed drives in short time

Hi

I have an MD1000 expansion enclosure that is filled with 2TB NL-SAS disks. We seem to be having a large amount of impending physical disk failures being reported. We had 2 last month and now another failure this month, I'm starting to think that it could be a hardware issue with the enclosure itself. Is there a way to reset the alert to see if it comes back up? Or some sort of error logs so we can see what is going on with the unit?

Thanks

Unable to change Host Groups asociations

Hi:

I'm setting up a two node cluster with two Dell servers and one MD3200 with dual controllers. Each server has two SAS HBAs, each one of them connected to each one of the SAN controllers for redundancy.

I'm stopped with an aparently stupid problem that not let me finish configuration, and I need to finish it urgently.

The problem is that server 1 was automatically asigned to the default group, and I tried to make a second group specifically for the cluster. I manually assign server 2 to this group, but no find way to assing server 1 too, so I try to desassign server 2 from cluster host group, to assign it to the default group, but I also can not find how. Now I have Server 1 linked to the default host group and server 2 to the clsuter group. All options for manage, edit or assign hosts or groups are disabled, and I can not configure the cluster.

I think the problem is that the Access virtual disk (automatically generated by the management software) is assigned to the two hosts groups, so I can not delete the cluster second group, so the two server are assigned, and the software don't let me do anything.

Management software versión is 10.84.G6.44 (last versión) and host SO is Windows Server 2012.

Need urgent help. Thanks in advance.

md3000i controller problems after new battery installed

We installed a new battery in our raid controller and it went fine but ~ 15 minutes afterwards started giving us errors. Now it has failed and will not finish booting up at all and we unseated it. Before purchasing another controller I want to see if there are any options to fix this one.

MDSM loses communication to MD3000 when new disk inserted

$

I've got a MD3000/MD1000 array attached to my Dell PE R805 running Win2008 R2 SP1. I've made sure all firmware and drivers have been updated to the latest version (I'm in the process of setting up a failover cluster with another server). In the process, I'm adding additional drive to expand as well as add a witness disk. The drives I'm trying to add are Seagate ST2000nm0001 (Constellation ES).

Everytime I slide one it, the array light goes orange and loses contact with MDSM. If I pull the drive out, the array will right itself and reconnect with MDSM after a minute or so.

MDSM suggests that 1) the array is turned off, 2) the network is unplugged, or 3) there are too many TCP/IP connections (?!).

Any thoughts?

MD3000i Server 2012 connection issues

$

I have tried to connect to our MD3000i with server 2012 with and without the Dell software. Actually they connect but I can't see the disk in diskpart on one server, the SAN see's the 2012 box as unknown (machine name) but show the correct IP.

The other 2012 box conects and in diskpart the drive status is "error".

Is Dell going to support this configuration?

I have no issues with 2008R2 servers.

Thanks,
