MD3000i - Problems with Thermal Sensor & Host Board

We recently shipped our MD3000i from one office to another, and after hooking it up at the new office, there is a problem with the system.

When connecting with MD Storage Manager, you get an alert saying the storage array needs attention. Upon closer inspection, there are two errors, which I have listed below.

I am able to ping the two iSCSI ports on one of the controllers, but unable to ping the two iSCSI ports on the other controller. However, if I swap the controllers by placing them in the opposite slot, then I can then ping the two iSCSI ports that I previously could not ping, but can no longer ping the one I was originally able to ping.

So I'm wondering if this means one of the controllers has gone bad? The lights on both controllers are normal, and I can connect to the management port of both controllers.

I'm not sure if the two errors below are specific to a controller - is the "host board" and "thermal sensor" on a controller, or are these parts of the backplane or other internal part of the enclosure?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Error 1:

Component reporting problem:     Host Board Left

Status:     Not available

RAID Controller Module:  Slot 1

Service action (removal) allowed:  No

Service action LED on component:  No

Error 2:

Component reporting problem:     Thermal sensor

Status:     Not available

Location:  Expansion enclosure 0

Component requiring service:  Temperature sensor

How to backup data via Windows Server Backup on Storage server 2008R2 to PowerValue 124T?

I have a Dell Server with Windows Storage Server 2008R2 on it. A autoloader PowerValue124T is connecting the server. When I use Windows Server Backup Utility to run a backup  job, the tape device isn't listed in the destination. But in device manager, it is listed with right driver. I know MS says Windows Server Backup does not support backing up to tape storage devices.

Is there any way I can make it work with Windows Storage Server 2008R2? or I have to use others' software.

Thanks,

Powervault MD3620i Modular Disk Storage Manager Will not Install

I currently have the Modular Disk storage manager software for our MD36201 installed on a management server. I am trying to install it on another server or PC just in case the management server is unavailable; I want to still be able to manage the MD array. I keep trying to install it on various machines and all the CD will install is the configuration utility. However, I do not need the configuration utility. I am not trying to connect an iSCSI, I am only trying to install the management software. When I run the install and choose the management station only checkbox it only installs the host software. I have even tried checking all boxes and it still just installs the host software. For some reason I cannot get the management station software to install. I have tried the CD that came with the array and I have downloaded the ISO Dell_MDss_Consolodated_RDVD_4_1_2_29.ios and the same thing is happening on both versions of media.

PowerVault TL4000 drives dropping from Windows -- Dell not helping

Hi All,

I have a PowerVault TL4000 library unit running Windows 2003 x64. Back in August I started getting random drops from our second drive while Netbackup was running. In device manager the second drive would not show up. The way I got the drive back and running is by downing the port on our Qlogic HBA fiber card and then bringing it back up. It also works if you make a change to the drive parameters from the tape library.  In the event manager I see the following before the drive drops.

The device 'IBM ULT3580-HH5 SCSI Sequential Device' (SCSI\Sequential&Ven_IBM&Prod_ULT3580-HH5&Rev_D2AD\5&346ea004&0&000000) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

This issue mostly happens with the second drive. If it happens with the primary drive, the second drive is also down.

I ran the Qlogic utility Sansurfer and it indicates that the ports and the card are good. I also ran a loopback test and everything is good with that as well. When the drive drops it shows in Sansurfer as disconnected as well.

Dell support also had me lose an entire week ordering new fiber cables which did not help at all. I even mentioned what were the chances that two cables would be bad and they said someone could have yanked on them.

Back in August when the issue happened I got this error in the library.  HE: internal SCSI cmd failed with check condition

Support has ran the IBM utility test and reviewed the drive dumps with no explanation as to why the drives are being dropped. So I have a library that is not functioning correctly and support not willing to help any further. Even if I buy a new Qlogic card and still have the problem I am at a loss because this person will continue to say there is nothing wrong with the library. This tech is finding every reason to blame something else besides the library. Can anyone suggest anything to help localize the issue?

Dell UPS Local Node Manager constantly fails and restores communication

Hi

I have the latest version installed (1.08.0015) on a Powervault NX3200.  The ULNM reports failed communication at random intervals of 5min to 20min, and restores on its own around 1min later.  I have the same software installed in Xenserver (R610) and Server 2003, none of which have communication issues.

The NX3200 is running Storage Server 2012.  I am confident I have entered the correct username and password when configuring the power source in ULNM.

When you update the Firmware on this model drives (via a server DELL POWEREDGE 2950, the controller can see the data disks) from a SUU_731_Q32013.ISO (the last set that exists for a set of equipment DELL) can not find the update in the repository. How can I solve this problem?

MD1000 lost virtual disk, says physical disks are foreign

Hi,

we've an MD1000 connected to a PE1950, both running happily since late 2006.

The MD1000 has 8x500GB SATA disks as a 7-disk RAID5 and 1 hot spare, in "unified" setting.

Yesterday the PE1950 and the MD1000 shutdown, and when they came back the MD1000 said there's no VD, and all the PDs are foreign.

OMSA doesn't report any problems, and it all looks happy ... apart from that.

It would be really nice if we haven't lost that 3TB of data.

Any suggestions?

Is it possible that clearing the foreign markers and recreating the VD would write only structure information and leave the data intact?

Might it help to use the other EMM (either by just moving the SAS cable, or by swapping the EMMs in their slots)?

Is it possible / easy / prudent to get a 4TB SATA disk connected somehow (I understand the MD1000 and the PE1950 and do a disk clone (or sector copy, or dd, or whatever) of each of the physical disks before trying anything like that?

Is this possibly a problem with the PERC 5/e in the 1950 rather than with the MD1000?

Installing and using POWERVAULT 114X on Windows

$

Hello all

We have recently spent a few thousand pound purchasing a POWERVAULT 114X with one LTO-6 drive in it. I have a Dell server running VMWare ESXi. I have configured VMWare (Pass through) and the SAS HBA is visible and installed on my Windows 2008 R2 server. All seems well, except that I cannot actually see the tape drive. I have installed Backup Exec 2012 on the server and it does not detect the drive.

I have looked everywhere for a Windows driver for the tape or any software needed, but I cannot find anything anywhere (apart from some firmware updates), no documentation at all. nothing. Clearly I am missing something.

Can anyone advise please? I am going bald from scratching my head figuring this out.

Hello,

Can someone explain me, why MD3000 configuration show that " raid group 1" (wich is made from 15000tr/mn SAS disk) is protected by 2 disk (11 et 3) because the disk "11" is a 7200 tr/mn AND that shoud ONLY protect the "grappe raid 2" (wich is made with 7200tr/mn SAS disk), Disk "3" is a 15000 tr/mn...

I have 2 vmware clusters and with one off them I'm receiving warnings alerts when IO is stressed.

This is the warning message

Node ID: md3220-cgn-bct
Host IP Address:
Host ID: Out-of-Band
Event Error Code: 4011
Event occurred: Nov 18, 2013 6:39:30 PM
Event Message: Virtual disk not on preferred path due to failover

Component Location: Enclosure 0, Slot 1

I have disabled one path in vmware and configure all VD ownership in the controller with the live path and the problem becomed less frecuent but persists.

This is how the hosts are connected to the md3220

vmware1 - hba1  -  - | - - ->controller 1

                - hba2 -  - | - |  ->controller 2

vmware2 - hba1  -  - |   |

                - hba2  - - - - |

Vmware multipathing is set up as most recently used (vmware).

All hosts are esxi 5.1

The last warning was 8 hours ago and in the same minute i receive the alert and the recovery.

Both paths bounce and happened  randomly with all virtual disks.

Best regards.

MD1000 drive rebuild won't start

$

Hi,

I have an MD3000i with two MD1000 configured in one array (RAID5). Last week we had a single drive failure in one MD1000, hot spare kicked in. I got a replacement drive, took the failed drive out and put a new drive in. At first the replaced drive had an amber light on for a while. Now the activity light (left) is solid green, the status light is off, but the rebuild on the replacement drive never started and hot spare is still in use. If I look at the physical drives list, the drive is still marked as "Failed". It seems that the enclosure didn't see the new drive.

Recovery Guru still has "Virtual Disk - Hot Spare in use" message. In Details section is says: "Failed physical disk at: enclosure 1, slot 1. Service action (removal) allowed: No. Service action LED on component: No"

Any ideas on how should I kick off the rebuild process on the replaced drive? I don't want to take the new drive out and re-seat it since it seems to be online and spinning.

I appreciate any advice!

Thank you, Alex.

R320 / 6gb SAS HBA / TL2000 tape library issue

$

New R320 running W2k8 R2 - fully updated and patched
All firmware updated to latest (BIOS, iDRAC, SAS6 card, LifeCycle, etc.)

Basically, the issue is the server can't see the tape library. System hangs while booting at the "Initializing Firmware" screen. Sometimes it will boot if I leave it for 30-40 minutes, and even then it wont see library. Done this with LifeCycle collection enabled and disabled.

System WILL boot if I remove SAS cabling to tape library, but kind of defeats the purpose, no?

Pulling out what little hair I have left, and Im ready to pull the server out of the rack and throw it across the room!
Tape library previously working on older server/OS (2650 win 2008 std), and has latest firmware.

Never had this many issues before in my 30+ year career in IT.

question about creating virtual disks on my MD3220i

$

I am creating a virtual disk where I'll be putting an SQL server and it's asking me to

pick Virtual Disk I/O characteristics type. The options are File system (typical), Database, Multimedia and Custom.

I'm thinking about selecting Database since this is for an SQL server. I am however not sure since I don't have a lot of

experience with this. My question is which one should I select or does it maybe not even matter?

thanks
