MD3000i Degraded Path

$

Hi,

We recently replaced a disk in MD3000i. The new disk was rebuilt and everything worked fine for a week or so. Now I got two alerts from Modular Disk Storage Manager:

Event Error Code: 1209
Event occurred: Jul 21, 2013 8:22:36 AM
Event Message: Physical Disk channel set to Degraded
Component type: Channel
Component location: Physical Disk-side: channel 2

and

Event Error Code: 1513
Event occurred: Jul 21, 2013 8:22:37 AM
Event Message: Individual physical disk - Degraded path

Any idea how to troubleshoot this? Is it related to the recent disk swap?

Appreciate your advice.

Alex.

Modular Storage Services runs with "interact with desktop"

Yesterday I updated the Modular Disk Storagd Manager for a MD3220 to Version 10.84.G6.25 and made a firmware update of the raid controller and the disks.

So far so good. The Hyper-V failover cluster survived this procedure. No VM crashed.

Now SCOM detects that the Services "Modular Disk Storage Manager-Agent" and "Modular Disk Storage Hardware Provider" runs with the flag "allow service to interact with dektop" activated and throws an error cause in our enviroment this is not allowed.

What happens if I deactivat the flag? For what purpose this flag is neccessary?

By-passed Physical Disk MD3000i

Hi,

We had a physical drive fail in one of our MD3000i enclosures yesterday, and our hotspare disk took over.
We had another brand new drive of the same size and with an identical firmware as the failed drive.

I removed the failed drive and waited for 30min before inserting the new one, it blinked green for 1 second, then no lights for 5-8 seconds then blinking orange.
The systemled now started to blink orange aswell, since it wasnt in an optimal state anymore.

All the MDSM tells me is that i have a By-passed Physical Disk, and looking at the physical disk sections tells me that the drive needs attention.
I verified both the failed disk (bad sectors) and the new disk (fully working) in a 2950 server.
I even tired with an old drive that used to populate the MD3000i but i got the same result.

I then tried the SMcli command revive physicalDisk [0,14];, set physicalDisk [0,14] operationalState=optimal; and start physicalDisk [0,14] initialize; but every command gave me the following result:

Error 35 - The operation cannot complete because the physical disk specified in the request is not valid (unknown physical disk reference). The physical disk may have been used or modified by a user on another storage management station accessing this storage array.

Any ideas how to proceed? I have already gathered a support bundle from MDSM and emailed Dells support, but they are rather slow in this matter. So i turn to the community for help.

Kind Regards

Magnus

Connect a powervault MD1000 to poweredge R720?

Hi,

I need to connect a nearly new MD1000 powervault (purchased on delloutlet earlier this year) to a new poweredge R720 . I know this is not offically supported. Would folks suggest going with a H810 raid controller or using the Perc 6/e card?

Has anyone tried this?

MD3000i unreadable sectors

Greetings!

We have an MD3000i that has been in operation for some time. It's configured with 15 x 750GB SAS drives, and recently we've experienced a couple of drive failures, including 1 of the 2 hot spares in the chassis.

Initially this chassis was configured with:

- RAID 6 array (named RAID6-1) with 5 drives - slots 0,1,2,3,4

- RAID10 array (named RAID 10-1) with 4 drives - slots 7,8,9,10

- RAID10 array  (named RAID10-2) with 4 drives - slots 11,12,13,14

- 2 drives labeled as hot spares - slots 5,6

A couple of weeks ago, we experienced a drive failure in the RAID 6 array. What was interesting is that neither of the hot spare drives automatically replaced the failed drive in the RAID 6 array. As a precaution, we migrated all the data off of the RAID 6 array, deleted the virtual disk and recreated it as a RAID 10 array.

This left us with a configuration of:

- RAID10 array (named RAID 10-1) with 4 drives - slots 7,8,9,10

- RAID10 array  (named RAID10-2) with 4 drives - slots 11,12,13,14

- RAID10 array  (named RAID10-3) with 4 drives - slots 1,2,3,4

- 2 drives labeled as hot spares - slots 5,6

- failed drive - slot 0

Today, I started receiving warnings about a failed RAID 10-2 array. In this case  the hot spare in slot 5 came up as failed, and the 2nd hot spare in slot 6 became active to rebuild the failed RAID 10 array.

So now we are looking at 3 failed drives in the array

but that's not really my question ... just some background.

During the rebuild process on RAID 10-2 I started receiving warnings about unreadable sectors. A report shows 38 unreadable sectors that have both a failure type of Logical and Physical. Here is where I am a bit confused ...

The unreadable sectors report is stating that the unreadable sectors are coming from a Virtual Disk that is on the RAID 10-2 array . This is the array that rebuilt today. The drives in this array are now - slots 11,12,13,6 (with 6 being the hot spare)

*BUT* the unreadable sector report is stating the Physical Disk location is  Enclosure 0, Slot 7

The storage profile report shows:

###  RAID 10-2

0,14

0,12 [mirrored pair with physical disk at enclosure 0, slot 11]

0,13

0,11 [mirrored pair with physical disk at enclosure 0, slot 12]

0,6 [hot spare physical disk is sparing for physical disk at 0, 14]

0,14

####

So I have a couple of questions:

1. Is the unreadable sectors report reporting slots numbers that start at 1 instead of 0. That would make the hot spare that just came into use the drive with unreadable sectors

2. The storage profile report does not show a mirror for slot 0,13  This disk was mirroring to the drive in slot 0,14 Shouldn't 13 & 6 be mirroring each other now?

To be on the safe side, we are migrating all data off of the RAID 10-2 array to the recently created RAID 10-3 array. We're also thinking about deleting the RAID 10-2 array and making it a RAID 1 array, so that we can utilize the remaining drives as chassis hot spares (while we await delivery of replacement drives we have already ordered).

Any insight or suggestions on this are appreciated.

Thanks!

Help Needed expanding a MD1000

I have a MD1000, PERC 6, fully populated with 15 Hard Drives.
0-2 are SAS 6.0 Gb/s, 450 GB, 15K drives - configured RAID 5 - represented as a single virtual disk
3-14 are SATA 3.0 Gb/s, 1TB, 7200 RPM drives - configured RAID 6 - represented as a single virtual disk

I want to add another MD1000 fully populated with 15 Hard Drives to use to extend my RAID 6 Virtual disk mentioned above.

I have found two online that I think may work.  Both are fully populated with 2TB, 7200 RPM, 64M cache, 6Gb/s drives.
The only difference seems to be that one is populated with SAS drives and the other is SATA, SATA being the cheaper solution, but not by too much...

Questions:
1. Will either of these work for me?  If so, and both, then which would be the better choice?

2. Is it going to be ok that the drives making up my current virtual disk that I want to expand are 3Gb/s and the ones in the new array I want to use to expand it are 6Gb/s?

3. Will I be able to expand the Virtual disk without loosing the data currently on it?  If so what are the steps in OpenManage to get that done?

Thank you for any help in advance,

Added Four SAS Drives to NX3100 -- RAID Question

So we now have a total of 14 drives.

  • Two 300GB SAS internal for boot/host OS
  • Eight 1TB SATA for data and snapshot storage
  • The four 600GB SAS drives

I am having difficulty adding a new Virtual Disk using all four of the new drives through the OpenManage utility.  It appears to limit me to using three of them.  Am I missing something?

General Questions on Adding Storage to PE2950

$

Hello,

First I'd like to say that I'm not that experienced with server setups, so please excuse my questions if they are the more "basic" variety. I also apologize if my questions seem redundant or unclear/vague as I try to explain/ask the best way I can. My questions on the PE2950 can be found here.

We will be using a second-hand PowerEdge 2950 server with a RAID 10 configuration. Since we will need more than 6TB of usable space, the current 6 bay X 2TB allowance by the server will not work, and because using a newer generation of RAID (e.g., H700) is not supported, the next option considered is using something from the PowerVault family to expand the HDD capacity.

My question is this: Will the PE2950 recognize the extended capacity provided by the PV? I'm thinking that we max out the (6) PE2950 bays with 2TB and supplement the additional requirements with a PV? If I fill the MD1120 (I picked this model randomly for the example) with (6) more 2TB HDD, will the PE recognize this additional space as well, or does the PE have a hardware limit on the amount of space it can use externally?

Will both the PE and PV need the same RAID controller, or is RAID handled by one or the other, or both?

Can I directly connect the PV to the PE, is it that simple, or would I need a network switch/some other hardware for this to work?

I assume the answers above are true for other manufacturers as well (e.g., IBM)?

Thanks you.

Help Resizing Partion

Hello All,

I am working on expanding a partition on my SUSE Linux Server but having a problem doing so. Here is some background on the setup.

- The drive is a "Virtual Drive" on a Dell Powervault MD3220
- I have increased the allocated space to that virtual disk from about 973GB to 1.16TB
- I rebooted to make sure the system rescanned the drives
- I can see through "Partitioner" that 1. the /dev/sdc drive now shows 1.1TB as it should and 2. the /dev/mapper/mpathc partition is listed at 1.1TB as well.
- Looking at "partitioner" it lists that partition type as a DM.
- The underlying file system for that partition is ext3 and I am not using LVM on that partition.

The issue is using the df -h command, I still only see 973G.

I attempted using the multipathd -k"resize map mpathc" command but it sat for over an hour and I never saw a change.

I'd appreciate anyone's help on how to expand what the file system sees.

Here is a screen shot of the df -h, fdisk -l and Partitioner window.

Best regards,
Daniel Joaquin

Clearing Errors - PV124T

I have a PV124T with a couple of old errors (both Tape Alert and Hard autoloader errors). I've addressed the issues and everything seems to test out fine now. However, I am unable to delete these old errors. I was wondering if anyone knew how to do this. Thanks again!

Monitoring Powervault MD3200's with Openmanage Essentials

We have a number of Powervault MD3200's that are connected to Poweredge R610's. They are connected by SAS.

I set up an Openmanage Essentials server, and would like it to monitor these MD3200's, however it is not discovering them.

What do I need to do?

Thanks

EDIT: Ok I was wrong. There are 4 PV MD1200's that are SAS connected to a MD 3200, and the MD3200 is connected to a PE R610.. Same question remains :)

Hi,

I have a MD3200i in OME 1.2 and i have an "unknown status alert" every hour :

...

I use SNMP + PowerVault MD discovery on the management port IP address.

I've already try to delete the MD then relaunch discovery with same result..

I'm using Modular Disk Storage Manager Client on another server to manage this array, could it be a conflict between OME and Modular Disk Storage Manager Client retriving Array status at same time ?

Does anybody have the same problem ?

MD3220 will not bring up Service Interface

$

We have purchased 2 used Powervault MD3220s (and 2 MD1200s as well).  I was able to setup one 3220 through the serial cable Service Interface and MDSM. However the other storage arrays will not bring up the Service Interface.

While connected to the serial port with putty, I press Ctrl-<Break> and press "S" and it simply sits there until I hit "Enter". It then gives me a -> prompt.

It also gives me an error for which I was not able to find any documentation.

NOTE:  Turning on tray summary fault LED
ERROR: SBB ICID value bad
WARN:  Suspending Ctlr: "SBB_Ctlr_Validation_Failed"
NOTE:  Flashing tray summary fault LED
WARN:  Controller entering ClientErr lockdown state..

If I type help it gives me several options, most of them seem to be very low level commands (tasks, memory settings, etc). Nothing to do with changing the IP address.

I've tried the  lemClearLockdown command, which I found elsewhere on this forum, but it doesn't get me out of the shell.

Also, MDSM doesn't find them even though I can ping them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Note: the MD 1200s use the MD36 RAID modules, the MD3220s use the MD32 modules.
Additionally none of the data is important. The hard drives are brand new.

esxi 4.1 not using all 4 ports

Hello,

We have 3 servers with 8 NIC's dedicated to iSCSI and connected to a MD3220i. I have explained the setup in a different if someone is interested threadhttp://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/storage/f/1216/p/19515658/20407337.aspx#20407337

Basically, all ports have different IP's and 4 subnets. In esxi, I can see 4 Active (I/O) paths for each LUN.

When I generate the iscsiStatistics.csv, it shows that a majority of IO is happening on Port 0/1 of each controller.

iSCSI Host Port	TxS	TxB

RAID Controller Module 0, port 0 256 28944
RAID Controller Module 0, port 1 4 144
RAID Controller Module 0, port 2 0 0
RAID Controller Module 0, port 3 0 0
RAID Controller Module 1, port 0 502 2880
RAID Controller Module 1, port 1 687 144704
RAID Controller Module 1, port 2 2 48
RAID Controller Module 1, port 3 26 144
Any pointers on what to look for? I have not manually changed the ownership of LUN's. Left it as default what the array assigns.
Thanks
