PowerVault TL4000 drives dropping from Windows -- Dell not helping

$

Hi All,

I have a PowerVault TL4000 library unit running Windows 2003 x64. Back in August I started getting random drops from our second drive while Netbackup was running. In device manager the second drive would not show up. The way I got the drive back and running is by downing the port on our Qlogic HBA fiber card and then bringing it back up. It also works if you make a change to the drive parameters from the tape library.  In the event manager I see the following before the drive drops.

The device 'IBM ULT3580-HH5 SCSI Sequential Device' (SCSI\Sequential&Ven_IBM&Prod_ULT3580-HH5&Rev_D2AD\5&346ea004&0&000000) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

This issue mostly happens with the second drive. If it happens with the primary drive, the second drive is also down.

I ran the Qlogic utility Sansurfer and it indicates that the ports and the card are good. I also ran a loopback test and everything is good with that as well. When the drive drops it shows in Sansurfer as disconnected as well.

Dell support also had me lose an entire week ordering new fiber cables which did not help at all. I even mentioned what were the chances that two cables would be bad and they said someone could have yanked on them.

Back in August when the issue happened I got this error in the library.  HE: internal SCSI cmd failed with check condition

Support has ran the IBM utility test and reviewed the drive dumps with no explanation as to why the drives are being dropped. So I have a library that is not functioning correctly and support not willing to help any further. Even if I buy a new Qlogic card and still have the problem I am at a loss because this person will continue to say there is nothing wrong with the library. This tech is finding every reason to blame something else besides the library. Can anyone suggest anything to help localize the issue?

Hi,

I just installed additional 2x2TB hard drives to my Power vault NX3100 server but when I tried to extend the new free spaces. It shows this error message " there is not enough space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation", I already done the disk defragmentation and it does not change anything. Any help will be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Dell MD3230 SAS with 4 x direct attach SAS to Host R720 Throughput Issue

I have the following configuration:

Dell PowerEdge R720 with 2 x Dual Port SAS HBA
Dell PowerVault MD3220 with 24 x 900GB SAS disks
OS = Windows 2012 Server Enterprise with 256GB RAM. (No Hyper-V)

I have connected the MD up using 2 ports going to Controller 0 and 2 ports to Controller 1. I have a single LUN configured. I have enabled MPIO and confirmed that the status indicates I have two channels as active, and two channels as passive. This is expected as the LUN is owned by Controller 0. The unexpected part is that I cannot seem to get more than 600MB/s throughput. I should be able to get 1200MB/s in this configuration.

Has anyone experienced this? Or have any suggestions?

Just updated firmware on TL2000 tape library and now....

The library was on v7.4.  Updated to the latest, which I believe was C.00

Now I get a message on the OCP saying "Incompatible Magazine.  Please change the left magazine".  Then it asks you to pull the left magazine, then put it back in.  It just does this over and over.  I tried powering it down.  Tried removing the right magazine "with a paper clip".  The OCP is unusable,  I get "Busy" if I try to use it.

Right now this library is unusable.

Is there any way to reset it to factory defaults?
The owner's manual doesn't say how.  Resetting it with the OCP is not an option.  Just get the "busy" message.

Anyway to recover from this problem?

Windows Server 2012 Cluster using Dell MD3000 as SAS JBOD

$

Hi there

I'm looking to build a Windows Server 2012 server cluster starting with 2x existing Dell PowerEdge 1950 systems.

Microsoft's view is that SAS and one or more shared SAS JBOD enclosures should be used for clustering using Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV).

1. Can I create a fully-working Windows Server 2012 server cluster using the MD3000, JBOD and storage spaces?

2. Will the Dell MD3000 (and maybe MD1000) STILL only work with Dell certified hard disk drives, or (as someone suggested elsewhere) can this restriction now been removed?

3. Will the standard MD3000 EMM controllers allow each HDD to be exported - NOT RAIDed - to the Windows Server 2012 operating system - so that drives in the array are seen as a true JBOD?

4. Which is the best / easiest SAS Host Bus Adapter to work with - presenting external SAS ports? Is it still the SAS 5/e controller, or some other?

5. When using disks in JBOD mode, will I still hit a 2TB disk / volume size limit with this Dell hardware?

6. What would be a recommended generic / 3rd party card that could be used in PE 1950 and later re-used in another server - eg HP server?

Thanks,

Ian

Disk issue

Hi,

We did just bought 6 new (dell supported drives) drives for our MD300i, and add them to the device, Last week we did create 2 new groups from these 6 new discs, and untill yesterday everything working just fine we could use these 2 virtual discs. today I found alot of error 11 (The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk5\DR29.) in the system logs of the OS.

I did check the drives of the SAN and findout the problematic drive is drive 9,( one of the new drives) and the Guru says that drive has been removed from the group or this drive belong to other group, things that did not really heppend.

so the question is,

is this new drive defect? or there is something els going on here?

MD3000 Gone Dumb

Was alerted the other morning that a MD3000 we have in production was down.  Upon investigating I found that the controllers were in a state on constant reboot.  I assume this because I could ping the out-of-band management IP addresses for about a minute, then they would go down for about 10 seconds and the start responding again.

I cannot get to the management interface MDSM, as it reports the system is unreachable.  I tried removing each controller one at a time, and still nothing.  I thought it might be a backplane issue so today I tried placing the controllers into another chassis, and moved the disks.  Same behavior...  So here is the odd part, if I remove all the drives the unit comes up fine and reports no errors, just no drives.  However, if I plug in just one drive it goes back to rebooting.  Any ideas?

Setup redundant iSCSI network with 2 network switches

$

Hi guys,

I'm rethinking the topology of our SAN. We have:

- 1 Dell PowerVault MD3000i SAN.

- 2 Cisco switches (supported by Dell).

- 2 Dell PowerEdge 710 servers.

I'm looking to connect the MD3000i with the PowerEdge servers through the switches in order to provide redundancy if any ethernet port or switch fails. So... I want to configure the iSCSI ports as shown in the following table:

C0 I0 = 192.168.1.10 (connected to switch 1)

C0 I1 = 192.168.1.11 (connected to switch 2)

C1 I0 = 192.168.1.12 (connected to switch 1)

C1 I1 = 192.168.1.13 (connected to switch 2)

Each switch will be configured as a non-stacked switched because I plan to use different IP addresses for each ethernet port.

PowerEdge servers has 4 ethernet ports each one, but we only use 2 and 2.

PowerEdge Server 1 - Port 1: 192.168.1.20 (connected to switch 1)

PowerEdge Server 1 - Port 2: 192.168.1.21 (connected to switch 2)

PowerEdge Server 2 - Port 1: 192.168.1.22 (connected to switch 1)

PowerEdge Server 2 - Port2: 192.168.1.23 (connected to switch 2)

At the iSCSI Initiator tool I will configure one target to two MCS (one connected to switch 1 and the other one to switch 2).

I want to know if this configuration works as I need. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Pablo.

Resetting the Primary eth / bond on DR4100

I ran the Setup Wizard on a DR4100 with only eth2 and eth3 connected. This created bond0 with these two interfaces, which are the 10GbE ports.

I want to add eth0 and 1 to bond0 and remove eth2 and 3, however, the DR4100 has set eth2 as the primary nic and won't let me remove it from the bond or add nics with different speeds to the bond.

Can anyone tell me how I can either

1. set a different nwif to be the primary or

2. Run the Initial configuration wizard again to setup bond0 with the desired nwifs

Thanks

David

Hello,

I'd like to implement Auto Tier functionality on my MD3660f.

Can I use traditional RAID group or Dynamic Disk Pool must be used?

I couldn’t find any document that describe the Tier configuration step by step. Is there any white paper that can be useful?

Accidental firmware upload to MD3620F

$

Hi, i just realized i accidentally initiated a firmware upgrade on an MD3620F with 2 controllers.  I started to load MD3200/MD3220 firmware to it, only to realize about 15 minutes later that there's a separate file for MD3620F firmware/NVSRAM, is there a safe way to cancel what i've already started?  The transfer appears to be running very slowly, and i'm not sure whether it will brick my whole system, or recognize that it's wrong and cancel itself automatically.  Help!
