Hi All,

I have a few question on the MD3220 & MD 1220 working with Win2012 Core server.

1) Is Windows Core supported with MD3220??

2) How do i configure the MD3220 within Core server, where i don't have the GUI interface?

3) I would like to check  if my SAS connect is correct;

Server - PCI card with 2 port

MD3220 -

RC0 - SAS IN 0 connect to Server port A

RC1 - SAS IN 0 connect to Server port B

RC0 - SAS OUT connect to MD1220 EMM 0 -IN

RC1 - SAS OUT connect to MD1220 EMM 1 -IN

Thanks.

Unable to set email relay host on DR4100

I'm on version 3.0.0154.2, and I'm having trouble setting the email relay host. It's the same from GUI and CLI. And yes, I do have access via the network to the mail server. And yes, DNS works...

I am able to send test mails without specifying the relay host, but I'm not able to set the option for sending daily stats reports without the relay host specified.

> alerts --email --relay_host server.domain.com
Error: Relay host server "server.domain.com" is not reachable.

> alerts --email --daily_report yes
Alert email settings updated.
Error: Daily stats report cannot send. Email relay host is not configured.
please configured relay host using alerts --email --relay_host.

> network --nslookup --destination server.domain.com
server.domain.com is an alias for server2.domain.com.
server2.domain.com has address <some ip>

The boxes are a pain to install. At my first try, I neglected to specify a DNS server on the initial setup. And after that I was unable to setup anything on the boxes. I had to do a system reset, and start all over again. Does anybody else have trouble setting up email relay host? The boxes are not joined to a domain...

Hope someone has a way to force the setting, because I do need daily stats to work... And yes, the boxes are in production...

MD3000 Service Interface password

I have seen myriads of posts on different forums for this issue, but what i am seeing is a little different. I have an MD3000 with two controllers. I am able to access the Service Interface menu on Cntlr 0 in the usual way, that is, Ctrl Break, press "S" within 5 seconds, then type in password of "supportDell", and the menu is displayed. Cntlr 1 is a problem. With a Ctrl Break I get the prompt to type "S" within 5 seconds and then the prompt to type in the password, but the password of "supportDell" does not work on Ctlr 1. In other words, I cannot get into the Service Interface menu in order to reset the password because i do not have the password I need to access the Service Interface menu. When we talk about resetting the password, which password are we talking about? How do I reset the password that is supposed to be "supportDell" so that I can access the Service interface menu?

Dell part # for MD1000/MD3000 debug/password reset cable?

I've search the forum but can't see this discussed anywhere. I have a dead MD3000 that is out of warranty.  I'd be willing to buy replacement parts EMM, power supply etc but I can't figure out what the problem is. I'm trying to track down the password reset/debug cable, but can't seem to find a part # on Dell's web site.  Does anyone know the pin out of the cable or where I can get one?

Would it work to use an old style PS/2 --> serial converter with a null modem cable, or is the debug/reset cable pinout different?

Thanks for any advice.  I'll give Dell a call on Monday, but I was hoping to work on this over the weekend if I can make up a cable myself to do some troubleshooting.

Will RAID work using MD1200 with R620 and 6Gbps SAS HBA?

We have an R620 that already has Dell SAS HBA in it that is attached to a 124T tape library.

Just got an MD1200 and I plugged it into the other port on the SAS HBA.  I can see the drives in Windows disk management.  I can also see them in Open Manage, but there are no options to use RAID or create virtual disks.  Should there be?

In fact, OpenManage says "Connector 0 (Non-RAID)" in regards to the 6Gbps SAS HBA.   I've been looking online for drivers for that card that allow RAID and can't find any.  Am I hosed?   How do I get the RAID to work on the MD1200?

PowerVault DM3000 Fault State

Hello,

I noticed that the Enclosure status LED indicator, on my Dell PowerVault DM3000 is flashing red.  The user guide says that a Flashing amber means the enclosure is in Fault State.   nothing regarding a red light.  only blue or amber.  I guess my red light refers to the amber light in the documentation.

anyway....  I went thru the user guide and there is information on how to troubleshoot specific problems like external connections, wet enclosure, damaged enclosure, power supplies etc..etc...

But the Fault State LED does not tell me what the exact problem is. so how can I know what to troubleshoot ?.

How can I determine what the problem is exactly ?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Joining a new MD1000 to an existing MD3000 query

I am also confused as to whether I am connecting our new MD1000 to our exisiting MD3000 in unified mode or in split mode. Our existing MD3000 has 2 host controllers in the back of it. Our new MD1000 has one primary EMM and one secondary EMM. From what I can make out I will be connecting the MD1000 to the MD3000 in Split Mode by running one cable from the "in" port on the primary EMM on the MD1000 to the available port in the first host controller on the MD3000 (slot 0) and then running a second cable from the "in" port on the secondary EMM on the MD1000 to the available port on the second host controller on the MD3000 (slot 1).

Can you confirm that the above is what I need to do?

Also looking at the pre-requisites for adding the MD1000 it mentions that I need to have the following in place:

"Expanding an Existing MD3000 Enclosure with a New MD1000 Enclosure
Perform the following steps to attach a new MD1000 expansion enclosure to an existing MD3000
enclosure.
NOTICE: The mode selector switch must be in the "joined" mode position for the MD1000 enclosure to function
with the MD3000 enclosure.
1 On the MD3000 enclosure, upgrade the controller software to A01 or later.
2 On both the host server(s) and the MD3000 enclosure, follow these steps (in order) to upgrade
components:
a Upgrade the SAS 5/E adapter driver and firmware. For Windows hosts, use the update package.
For Linux hosts, use the DKMS package.
b Upgrade the Modular Disk Storage Manager on each host server. (The latest version is available
from support.dell.com.) Refer to the PowerVault MD3000 Installation Guide for detailed
information.
c Upgrade the multipath drivers on each host server. The multipath drivers are bundled with the
Modular Disk (MD) Storage Manager installation package.
On Windows hosts, the drivers are installed automatically when you install MD Storage Manager
in Full or Host mode. On Linux hosts, you must install multipath drivers manually.
NOTICE: If prompted, reboot the host server(s) during the upgrade process.
3 Once all components have been upgraded, shut down the host(s), then shut down the MD3000
enclosure.
4 Attach the MD1000 expansion enclosure to the MD3000 enclosure, following the steps given in the
Dell PowerVault Compatibility Matrix (available from support.dell.com)."

Is there any documentation in place that explains how to perform the firmware updates on both the MD3000 and the MD1000? Thanks.

Doug

DR4100 email alert not working

$

I've setup a DR4100 and it is mostly working great.
One thing I cannot get working though is the email alerts.

There is a Recipient address, an Email Relay Host  and Admin Contact info (which I assume is the sender address used) configured. The unit itself resides on a IP subnet with no routing to the outside world, so the Email Relay Host is pointed at the IP address of our backup server, also with an interface on the same subnet. On the backup server (Windows 2012R2) there is a portforwarding done (to a SMTP server) with "netsh interface portproxy", a setup I've used in many similar cases.
I can not see any connection attempts (TCPView) on the backup server from the DR4100, nor can I see anything in the SMTP servers logs. The DR4100 itself says "Successfully sent email to all recipients" and the event log says "Test email sent".

Is there any other log on the DR4100 that could show what's really going on, or how should I solve this mail alert problem?

M3000 Events in System Log

$

I've been setting up some alerts via the Windows System Log, but ive been unable to get an MD3000 to alert anything through that log (or anywhere outside of the storage software). Pulling a disk doesn't seem to log anything (like a 224D or 226C or something) anywhere that I can monitor with a trigger. Anyone know if I'm missing something with this? In fact, something I find odd is that if I pull a drive out, the array doesn't immediately kick in the hot spare. So when I put the pulled drive back after a minute or two, it comes back to the array as online. It's set in raid5 with only 6 disks (just doing some testing, not in production), so I should immediately fail to the spare and show a disk failure in the log. I also am not planning on going down the SNMP road for various reasons. So lets assume that's not an option. Any ideas on why I'm not seeing log entries and also this disk behavior?

124t not cleaning

Greetings! I have a customer's PowerVault 124t is getting the clean head message. They run new cleaning tapes but still will not run a backup.

Will the system need new heads by chance? Wondering if there is any way to repair the unit with new heads, or simply swap the machine out with an refurb unit.

Thanks for the help!

Only 24 of 48 disks available for Disk Pool

I have an MD3220 with a 1220 shelf and I'm trying to re-configure and create one large disk pool with all 48 disks.  However, when I go to create the disk pool, it only pulls 24 disks in for 14tb but shows 32tb available.  I blew away the configuration of the previous setup because we had to take a 1220 shelf from this unused array for another project so now I am getting back around to reconfiguring.  I'm wondering if the premium features need to be re-enabled because I cleared the config.  Possibly that is it.  When I go to md-storage.com to regenerate a key of course it does not have any idea what my system is.  Is there something I am missing.   Should be a two minute task which is now going to take hours apparently.

MD1000 Unified Mode and 2 Active Directory Servers

$

Hi all, I am no expert with servers, however i do get through well enough.

I currently have 2 identical servers poweredge 2950

One is a master windows 2012 server active directory server and the other is the same but the mirror slave.

I have a MD1000 Powervault connected to the active directory master controller, however i thought to myself, not allot of good having people being able to login on the backup secondary if they cant access the md1000 where all their files are.

So question, i currently have the MD1000 running in unified mode. Is it possible to connect the other server up to the other side or anywhere else to have it also showing on the slave?

That way if the primary controller goes down, people can still login and access their files on the MD1000.

I hope that all makes sense.

If not, does someone have a suggestion for how they would accomplish this?

Expanding a MD1000

I currently have a Powervault MD1000/DL2000 combo used for backups.  I need to expand the disk capacity without affecting the existing backups.  What's the easiest way to do this?

Can I purchase a further MD1200 and simply connect this in series using the mini-scsi connections?

Will there be an un-crippled PowerVault RAID-firmware soon? (...to be able to use any compatible drive)

$

So when is Dell going to allow people who know what they're doing to do it? I want a switch that I can flip in the PowerVault to allow me to use any compatible drive in the DAS. I know my product; I know the IO patterns, loads, etc. that have to be supported. I should be able to buy a bunch of---oh, I don't know---*inexpensive* disks and rotate them through the server once every 12-24 months. If I want bleeding edge, extremely high risk, it's my prerogative.

Too late I've come to the realization that PowerVaults are crippled right out of the box. I can't just install any hard drive that supports the drive interface. It not only has to support the normal, well-established standards (SAS, SATA, etc.), but someone down in the basement at Dell has to put it in some arbitrary whitelist that's hard-coded to the RAID-Firmware. You know, the firmware that gets updated once every ...whenever?  ...and is updated with a list of drives that are 1 product-cycle behind---if you're lucky? The one with the whitelist that's documented in a PDF that takes about 12 hours to find (and confirm it's actually for the hardware and firmware you may have).

\______________________Drip pan for sardonic sarcasm from the rant_________________________/

As it stands, I'll be certain that we never purchase any new Dell machines that are crippled in this fashion.

Powervault 124T overheat problem...

$

Over the weekend my Powervault 124T with a Quantum LTO-4 drive in it started to display an error message related to the temperature being too high.

Over Temperature!

Sys: 59C (this varies slightly) DCA: 4C

I've tried powering on and off and disconnecting from the server.

Looking up this in the manual it basically says to check the fans (they are blowing) and to check that there are no blockages.  It took awhile but briefly the unit was fine enough (not sure if having a fan blow at it helped) to get the tape ejected from the drive. However the message now always displays. Since we're out of warranty I'd like to repair this thing myself. The error is an autoloader error not a drive. Where is the sensor in the unit that is detecting this or is this a false message?   I'm guessing maybe the controller interface board I see on eBay?
